Over the past few weeks, as a parent I have been praying about how to present Jesus to my children. How do I teach them about God? Who He is, what He does, what He has done, and what He is doing? I have realized that my daughter has really great questions. Questions that I most likely did not ask my parents when I was her age. The more she inquired the more I realized I needed to dig deeper. So I looked at her and thought, where do we begin? Of course, the beginning!
We picked up a children’s bible that was given to our family at our son’s baby dedication. This book entitled The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name (Jones, 2007) has been a most excellent starting point. I find that when I sit and read the stories with her she in intrigued by the very detailed illustrations and slowly she gets drawn into the stories. With these stories we spend a lot of our reading time together discussing as well as both asking and answering questions; This is where the perseverance and patience come in. No matter how tired I am and no matter where we are the questions she stops to ask are always met. Even if it’s with an “I don’t know, but we will soon find out.” She seems to take that in and draw upon the stories from previous days that we read and share together. As we read there is peace. As we read there is patience. As we read there is love. And as we read, I pray that there is understanding as we dig deeper.
