What’s in the water?

A question posed to me by my 4 year old after listening to Carrie Underwood’s song Something in the Water. What’s in the water? lingered in my mind as I fell silent after the song. When I was interrupted in thought by – Mommy, MOMmy, MOMMY! What’s in the water?

So after much prayer and inquiry on my part. It’s not all about what’s in the water, it’s also the act of getting in the water and the choice you make to be committed to Jesus. The baptism that you experience is a ceremony that bonds you to Christ. You make a true commitment to accept Jesus into your heart. Like a marriage ceremony. Nobody sees the marriage certificate but they go to the wedding. They go to celebrate your love and commitment to each other. A baptism is that, a commitment ceremony to follow Christ. To stay devoted and committed to him. To wholeheartedly live in him and accept his unconditional acceptance. Nobody sees the actual day you chose to accept him, but they get invited to the day you choose to say “I do.”

So what’s in the water? I’ll tell you my dear: it’s peace, it’s grace, it’s love, it’s Jesus.

Acts 2:38 (NIV)
Peter said, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Dear Lord, choosing to accept you is something given to us through our own free will. Please give wisdom to all children and even adults who may have the same question of ‘what’s in the water?’ May you be found and felt in our hearts, bodies, minds, and souls when we choose to get baptized for you. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
